Cape Maclear sits on the Nankumba Peninsula inside Lake Malawi National Park — the first freshwater national park created anywhere in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. What earned it that status is underneath the surface: several hundred species of cichlid fish, most of them found in this lake and nowhere else on earth.
For a visitor that translates into the clearest freshwater snorkelling in Africa. You wade off a rock and are immediately among bright mbuna in water warm enough to stay in for hours. Boats run out to Thumbi West Island, where the guides feed fish eagles that drop to take fish off the surface a few metres from the boat.
The village itself has been welcoming travellers for decades and remains genuinely a village rather than a resort strip, which is much of its appeal.

Year round, clearest September to December
The lake is warm all year. May to September is dry and cooler with comfortable days. The water is at its clearest from September through December, which is the best window for snorkelling and diving. January to March brings rain, usually as short heavy afternoon storms rather than all-day wet.
Getting there
Roughly four hours from Lilongwe and four from Blantyre, the last stretch on a good tarred road to the village. We drive you door to door.
